Can We Truly Heal?

Having gone through a lot of traumas, heartbreaks and disappointments, a client asked me if healing was really possible. Her question reminded me the many times I have doubted my own process.

Acknowledging doubts is better than denying them. We can address that which we are aware of. What we ignore or suppress continues to fester, and the unresolvedness shows up as insatiability and different life challenges.

Curing diseases or solving problems is different from healing. The former is often targeted at specific issues, and the latter is about developing the whole person – body, mind, heart and soul.

Healing reconnects us with the parts of us that we have lost or forgotten. The result is we reclaim our authentic power and view our challenges in proportion. We feel, know and trust that we are “bigger” than the problems.

In this new stance, we cultivate spaciousness within. Instead of feeling like we are pushed to the edge, we relax and embrace what is here. We stopped wishing things were different or focusing our energy on “fighting the enemies.”

When we redirect our attention to what is here instead of what is not here, we heal our relationships to the problems. The problems that have seemed insurmountable turn into opportunities that we could not see before.

The more parts of ourselves that we reclaim, the more we can access the peace and trust deep within us no matter how chaotic situations seem to be.

We walk with grace not necessarily because we get what we want, but because we realize the source of peace, joy and freedom comes from deep within us. Ironically, it is often through that state that incredible healing happens.

My clients usually seek help because they can’t stand the discomfort from the challenges. When I help them get in touch with the dormant aspects of themselves, they become the ones who can transform their own struggles.

Healing seems unreachable to many because there is too much focus on doing instead of being.

That is why people lose weight and gain it back, end a tumultuous relationship and get into another dysfunctional relationship, recover from one illness and other health issues pop up, or receive a financial windfall and lose it.

We can do everything right, but if we operate with an undercurrent of “I am doomed, I am bad, I am not good enough,” the effort is greatly discounted and the results won’t last.

If our actions are stemmed from love, trust, and curiosity, the healing journey will be more than rewarding even if we are not taking perfect actions.

For example, gratitude practice can bring us incredible healing, expansion and joy. If we are grateful only when things go our way and spend the rest of the time worrying or thinking what isn’t right, that practice will not take us very far.

If we approach the practice with love rather than treating that as a task, we will be compassionate with ourselves whenever we catch ourselves being ungrateful, worrying, or obsessing with what is not here yet.

It is our loving attention that turns the tide.

Whenever we are grateful conditionally, it takes more effort to heal because we are at war with ourselves. Internal conflicts consume a lot of energy and do not help us heal or fulfill our dreams and desires.

If you have done a lot of work on yourself, it can feel discouraging at times because the healing journey seems to take forever. It helps to remember that healing crises are often opportunities to further develop our full potential.

Crises occur not because we are unlucky or slow in learning. Crises are nudges for us to uncover greater treasures. If we don’t pay attention or refuse to change our ways, the nudges will get louder and bigger.

Next time you wonder: why am I not there yet? Reframe your question as: I wonder what treasures are there for me to discover. What if problems are gateways to discover my potential so I can shift my reality again and again?

You might think incredible healing and treasures are reserved for the lucky few and they are beyond your reach. Don’t believe everything the mind says. If you are willing to go beyond the mind, you open yourself to new levels of resources.

Understanding the language of the body and soul is the key to healing. Our bodies are portals to wisdom from our souls. When we learn to trust the wisdom from our bodies, incredible shifts and changes happen.

Tuning to spirit’s wisdom through the body has served me and my clients immensely. Since my body “gave” me so many problems, she was the last place I expected to find any treasure.

Our healing journeys help us know the Self beyond the self. The new identity we come to embrace helps us move through life with grace.

People who exude calm or radiance savor life no matter what happens. They are fully present. It’s not because they have everything or life is smooth-sailing for them.

Holding love and reverence during our process greatly affects our abilities to cross the thresholds. In that state, pain resolves, outdated relationships fall away, healthier relationships greet us, healing accelerates beyond logic and comprehension.

Back to the client I mentioned in the beginning, she was able to turn her life around within 3 months. You can read about her transformation in my blog – Bridging the Gap.
